Think quick, a bomb is ticking!
Pass the bomb junior (pdf)
What kind of type:
A fast-paced word game
Use in teaching foreign languages:
Brainstorming and revision of various topics
Level:
A1.2/A2.1
Group size:
2 – 12 players
More than one group possible?
Yes, but each group needs its own bomb and therefore an extra bomb is needed.
Time:
Short explanation only, time can be varied from 10 up to 20 minutes
Contents of the game:
A bomb with a timer making the bomb “explode” (an exploding sound) sometime between 10 and 60 seconds; one pack of 55 cards, each of which is illustrated with a familiar scene and have a describtion in English, French and German such as in a restaurant, on the street, in the park
What it is about:
It is a fast game, during which a bomb is passed around.
The first player turns the top card from the pack and places it face up in front of all players. S/he starts the bomb by pressing a button underneath it and begins to name out loud the first association to the given topic (e.g. if the card shows a bathroom one could mention “towel”, “foam”, “duck” etc.). S/he passes the bomb quickly to the next player who names something that has to do with the topic and so on until the bomb explodes. The player, who is holding the bomb when it explodes, has to take the card. The player with the smallest number of cards wins.
Variations and our experience with the game:
No words are allowed to be named twice and the players have to be encouraged to stop each other, if a word is named twice.
Any new topics recently covered in class can easily be added to the game.
The bomb can be used to make verb conjugations more fun as well: A verb is named and the group starts to conjugate the verb as quick as possible
Our valuation:
+ It is a great game to play in between two long hard working sessions for waking up the students and energising them.
+ The bomb is a fantastic tool to make verb conjugations more fun and dynamic
– The bomb could explode a little bit more bomb-like

Further comments:
The game is available on the German market under the name “Tick Tack Bumm Junior” from the publisher Piatnik.
There is also an adult version available that contains no picture cards but syllables. In this edition words have to be found that contain the given syllables. This is much more difficult and could therefore be used for higher levels (from B1 onwards).
