blind cow (pdf)

What kind of type:
A touch-and-guess game with cardboard shapes

Use in teaching foreign languages:
The game trains the vocabulary of objects used in everyday life, animals, buildings or transport

Level:
A1.1

Group size:
2 – 4 players

More than one group possible ?
Yes, there are enough shapes for two groups, but extra masks will be needed. When playing in two groups up to 8 players can play at the same time.

Time:
5 – 10 minutes

Contents of the game:
60 shapes, 2 masks, 1 bag, 1 manual including further suggestions for variations of the game

What it is about:
Players put on the masks and take a shape out of the bag. The player feels the shape (with both hands) and guesses what it is. If the player recognizes and names the shape correctly in the target language, the player keeps the shape which counts as one point. (If there are two groups, the player gets a point and places the form back into the bag.) A new round starts in which the next player puts on the mask and tries to guess the form s/he has drawn.

Variations and our experience with the game:
It is an unusual drill of vocabulary which is great fun. Once a word is discovered, it will not be forgotten easily.
Furthermore, the players learn words that are very much the same in their mother tongue, but pronounced or written differently in the target language: Giraffe, elephant, bonbon…

During my experience with this game it never happened that someone refused putting on the mask, as long as the teacher or head of the game is convinced of the game.
It is useful to put some protective foil on the inside of the mask to keep them clean and protected from make-up or greasy skin.

Our valuation:
+ a funny game
+ the box is still easily portable, but has nearly A4 size

Author/publisher:
Ravensburger

Further comments:
It is a classic German game and got the predicate „good game“ from the “Arbeitsausschuß Gutes Spielzeug” (workgroup good toys)

Price category: 2

The game is available from Ravensburger in English under the name “No Peeking!”, but the masks are of a dog and a cat. I think the cow masks of the German version look prettier :-)
