Once upon a time… (Eng)
Once upon a time…
Once upon a time (pdf)
Type of game:
Story telling, communicative card game
Usage in teaching foreign languages:
Training communication skills (how to start a sentence and subsequently link sentences together)
Having produced something beautiful and creative, the players are often left with a strong feeling of communal achievement
Vocabulary: fairy tales
Grammar: past tense, syntax, word order
Level:
from A2.2
Group size:
2-10 – more interesting with more then 2 players
Duration:
20-45 minutes
Contents of the game:
112 story-teller cards, 56 “story ending” cards
How does it work:
The players create a story together, using cards that display typical elements from fairy tales. One player is the Storyteller and creates a story using the “ingredients” on her cards. She tries to guide the plot towards her own ending. The other players try to use cards to interrupt her and become the new Storyteller. The winner is the first player to play out all her cards and end with her Happy Ever After card!
Variations and our experience with the game:
We advise introducing the game with a brainstorming session on the topic of „fairy tales“. It helps to make the story telling more fluent.
It can also be inspiring to decorate the room, creating a fairy tale atmosphere.
Once a fairy tale has been created, one can use this for subsequent teaching modules (writing down the tale, playing scenes etc.)
Our valuation:
+ It is a beautifully designed game
+ It has a rather friendly character, without competitive elements (some people would consider this a negative by the way…?)
+ It is easily portable and because of the large amount of cards, it is garanteed that every story will be new and unique
Further comments:
The game is also available in the following languages:
Spanish: “Once upon a time: Érase una vez“
Italian: “Once upon a time – Italian”
And in English also the follow-up “Once upon a time Dark Tales”
